Independent Project Inception

For the final brief of the year, we have the biggest and most extensive project to complete. All the time studying for the Degree so far has lead to this one project and i am determined not to let it fall flat.

Having a basic knowledge of what i want to produce will help me in many ways already. As i know the project will be mainly one of my choosing, consisting of my own work that allows for the full awarding of 40 credits, i have to work out the work load myself, through submissions, documentation and execution. With this in mind, i began to look into my chosen career path and the things i would ned in order to achieve my goals of working within the industry. Over the last 6 months, i have been looking for work within the gaming creation industry, only to fall short everytime with never having received any kind of correspondence. Through this time looking for work, i have had a great opportunity to look at the desired skills section of many job opportunities.

With the pieces i have produced in previous projects, i feel it is only a natural progression for me to want to move onto more intricate and complex things within that industry. With this, i have noticed that many of the desired skills centre around 3D modelling, specifically things like ZBrush, 3DS Max, Maya and Cinema 4D. Although in my last project my plan was to use Cinema 4D to create a realised environment, i think having to hold off on that has put me in a good position now. Through my research i have not only found that a better software to produce such things in would be Maya, but also that many of these jobs require the knowledge of a gaming engine; most notably Unity, or Unreal.

These revelations have not only allowed me to find thing i need to progress in my chosen career path, but has also allowed me to see my own progression route from Concept Art to 3D modelling. With the skills i already have, i can now lean towards certain softwares that will allow me the ability to apply for jobs fully informed of the creative environment with an actual ability to put forward.

My initial idea is set out into the 3 main parts i have found; Concept Artwork, 3D Modelling and integration of a game engine. I feel that these 3 things are the most important for me to move forward, and should be an integral part of my independent project proposal. Although i have limited to no experience with 3D software, this is my dream. I know that it will be challenging to overcome these hurdles, but i am more than willing to push myself to prove that this is what i want.

After having the brief set and already knowing my initial idea, the proposal fell together quickly. My only real gripe was with the gaming engine and how difficult it would be to integrate all my assets into if when finished. This lead me to seek out a few introduction tutorials to Unity. After watching a few of these, many of the things i picked up on were the fact that Unity seems to be based alot on 3D texturing, collisions and placement. Obviously there is a lot more to it than that, but for my purposes it doesn't seem to farfetched for me to want to use it to combine any assets i create. In the knowledge of this i rechecked the brief and began to form my proposal.
