Having a final look over the brief, i have pulled out a few key aspects that i will include in the decision for my projects. Although the project itself is academic, i do want it to allow me to progress in my chosen field and allow me to become the creative person i wish to be. Integrating these points into my brief will help me to maintain both motivation and inspiration through the challenging tasks i will have to overcome over the next 6 weeks.
The final outcomes consist of:
- Formulate and articulate clear intentions;
As my proposal develops from my initial ideas coupled with my experience of job hunting, i feel my intentions have been allowed the opportunity to fully embody all i wish to create.
- Formulate a brief around a given subject that is within your ability and displays your strengths;
My proposal will allow for the integration of my strengths whilst also allowing me to progress faster than i have been able to before. With the integration of 3D software into this project i believe my abilities will be tested and allowed to grow over the time in the project. This will allow me to not only showcase my old abilities, but prove that i can adapt very easily and efficiently.
- Take a given subject and make a personal statement that communicates to others and answers a brief;
- Plan and pace your work to meet external demands;
- Work effectively with limited supervision.
After assessing all the outcomes i can begin to draw up my proposal ready for submission. Bearing in mind all that i need to be aware of, along with the things i wish to create, my proposal is a combination of my desires, personal progression and academic restriction.
My proposal reads as follows;
University of Brighton
Sussex Downs College Lewes
BA (Hons) Digital Media Design
INDEPENDENT STUDY ASSESSMENT PROJECT
Registration of Project Choice
Chosen Project Title:
Planning and Creation of 3D Game Assets Using 3D Modelling and a Game Engine
Subtitle:
2D to 3D Game Asset Development
Brief Overview:
I am proposing a project using 2D artwork to aid me in the development and creation of game assets.
Proposal
The proposal is to create a gaming environment progressing from 2D concept artwork, through to a completed gaming environment that an object can move through.
I will be mocking up and designing a range of both environmental concepts and character concepts in Photoshop and/or Illustrator to then have the best refined and transferred into 3D. Using a character modelling program such as ZBrush to create 3D character models and a 3D modelling program such as Maya to help with creation of the environmental assets, I aim to use these assets within a game rendering engine such as Unity.
Using all the assets created, within a game engine I will use them all to create an environment in which a game can be set. The completed work could either be in the style of an open world game, or a 2D side scroller.
My proposed submitted work consists of;
Finalised Character Concept Artwork
Finalised Environmental Artwork
Finished 3D Character Models
1 Unity file containing finished Environment
A 1 minute video panning through the final environment and characters
The proposal is an embodiment of my experience and my desire to succeed in this chosen field. I have picked 4 very distinct sections to work within in the 5 weeks i have left to accomplish this;
1. Concept Artwork
Through my time to this point i have worked in Photoshop creating Concept Artwork for my final submission of many pieces. I will use what i have learn through Environment and Character sketching to formulate the ideas that i will then translate into 3D software. These piece will then be refined and a select few will be used for submission, in either print form or as a digital image.
2. 3D Character Modelling
I will be using ZBrush to create character models that will be used as stills for my finals piece. I have had no experience with ZBrush, but from my experience it seems a very necessary skill to have for modelling in this industry. That is why, although my knowledge of it is limited, i am going to push myself to learn all i can about it in the time i have left, allowing me to create atleast one character model for my submission.
3. 3D Environment Modelling
As with ZBrush, i will be using another 3D software for the first time to create environmental assets; Maya. Using Maya to create these assets will not only allow me somewhat of an easier transition into Unity, but will also allow me the knowledge of the software, leading to more skills in my personal toolkit.
4. Integration into a Game Engine
Using Unity seems necessary to this project. Although it will only really be used to stitch everything together, i feel it's presence in this project is important. Not just to showcase my ability to use it, but also to really time everything together with the title. Creating Game Assets on there own may be fine, but i would very much like a pan through video for one of my final submissions. This is the reason i have chosen to include Unity in my project.
With all these points outlined in my project pitch, justified and otherwise; I feel i am now able to push forward with both my learning and my design work.
