The next project is the D&AD award, and knowing this project would come very quickly, i went through all the briefs prior to the brief actually being set.

I scoured through for specifically illustration and 3D rendering based projects, and came across one that fit my criteria to allow for personal progression, but also allow me to fulfil the brief set. It will have to be changed later on slightly so i can put my own spin on the project myself, but at least on it's own it seems to accommodate all the things i want to work towards.

Of the briefs i found, only one seemed suitable; This brief is for WeTransfer. WeTransfer are a company that allows it's users to upload large files to a server, and send the links amongst whomever they like, allowing them to download the files themselves. The company specifically aim for those wanting to transfer large documents to others for free, allowing the user a free 10 gb limit.

The brief they have set doesn't really tie in with this whatsoever. The brief they have set is primarily illustration based, requiring a print image, or video at the end of it to "show who you want to be in 10 years". As far as i can tell so far, WeTransfer only have one branch of media standing, which doesn't necessarily make sense when asking for this brief. But that being said, it does allow me to create the project i've been looking to make thus far this year.

The brief itself reads;

Create a print and online illustration to celebrate the person you’ll be in 10 years’ time. You can be whoever, wherever, however you want to be. Who knows – this may be a prophecy...Create your response in any medium you feel best represents you (the future you).

You get to decide who your target audience is. It can be who or whatever you want it to be, just be sure to tell us when you submit your work.
Consider how you might use the image, and how it might be viewed. Could it be for self-promotion, publication, retail or something else all together?

This, in my reading anyway, is very very open. It has fluidity to allow one to manipulate and shape the brief to however they see fit. For my response, conceptual art is the main focus. My main aim is to integrate many 2D concepts and fully render them in 3D. The rest of the brief seems to allow for this progression.

In terms of consideration, the brief mentions many things, and again doesn't settle on an actual solid solution to the brief.

What To consider
This is your opportunity to create a future you. It’s up to you how you interpret this. Consider, question and ultimately celebrate the person you want to be.
  • Your response doesn’t have to be a literal portrait, although it can be if you want. Indulge in yourself and your abilities.
  • Question the things that matter most to you now. Will they still matter to you in the future? How will you have changed? What will you love and hate? What will you have kept with you from today and what will you have lost along the way?
  • Think about what ‘illustration’ means in the 21st Century. It’s a broad church of skills and approaches, from established analogue techniques to emerging digital tools; from hand rendered typography to 3D model making, hand torn collage to highly rendered CGI, from the single static image to the animated narrative. Perhaps your future portrait will be made using a method yet to exist? Does your choice of medium reflect the person you’re presenting?
  • Remember that concept is key. Illustration is most powerful when driven by a strong concept.
  • This brief is designed to stimulate creativity, self-promotion and discovery, so be as expressive as possible and make it count.
Above, i have highlighted the main parts i with to focus on in green. These will be the things i integrate into my own working of the project.

For submission, the brief requires the following;

  • A portrait of the future you, with one print and one digital execution.
  • The type, size, etc of these executions is up to you (though make sure that when
    you come to enter you adapt your work to fit the submission spec). Your print piece could be a poster, book, or even postage stamp. Your digital execution could be static, moving, or interactive. The print and digital executions should be extensions of each other, that can work together but also stand alone.
  • Document and show your research and how you developed your ideas.

My approach and execution of this brief will come from the things i love, the places i wish to progress to in my career, and also the acquisition of knowledge i need to progress into my desired field. Up until this point, my goal has been to become a concept artist for film, game and television, and i think if i can use this brief in the right way, it will allow me to progress even further, both with the skills i already have, and the skills i wish to acquire.

This brief will include the use of Photoshop, Illustrator (depending on my needs), Cinema 4D, and ZBrush. This is what i know so far, and this is what i shall base my concept and progression around.
