The second imagine i wanted to create would have a slightly different approach. Recently i have come across a few new approaches to environmental concept design and one particularly caught my eye. the approach is very similar to the colourisation of an image, but the light is applied instantly instead of the colour. This allows for the painted to figure out the light source and it's interaction with the objects without having to consider colour or saturation.
The image themselves are painted in greyscale, using only a monochrome palette. This way, the initial concept is created primarily through shape manipulation and light interaction. Once the light study had been completely in greyscale, the layer can be duplicated, flipped to multiply layer mode and the colour can be added on the layer below.
The ideas come together very quickly as the process is a lot more fluid that the last approach i had to projects. All the design work is done in one layer, and everything is fleshed out very quickly.
The image i created is set somewhere in the depths on a valley, with only a singular light source to allow for vision. This way i do not have to worry about many light sources effecting the shading, and afterwards i can work out how to add the mysterious figure to my work.
The first stage looked like this;
In the image above, i applied a small amount of colour to the focal point. I used a polygonal lasso tool to pick out the section, and used a very soft brush to apply the blue colour to the layer underneath, letting the greyscale multiplied layer above do all the shading work for me. As my project proposal stated, there must be a figure to represent me in all of the images i work on. In this case, i thought it best again to use the wizard figure, using his staff as a secondary source of light, illuminating the darker areas of the image. Applying the same effect as before (this time without the linear dodge) I created a dark figure illuminating his path through the darkness. This time i laid the colourisation on top of the greyscale layer to add even more intense reflection to the rocks.
Overall, i am very pleased with how this came out. It was very quick and very easy to produce. the scale and feel really pulls focus on this one and i think it really represents my project well.
Also, flipping between the images on the blog post really show what impact the addition of the secondary light source has.
